The Foundation of Pai-Chai

The history of Pai-Chai University commences with the establishment of Pai-Chai School in 1885. Founded by the American missionary Reverend William B. Scranton, the school received official recognition from Emperor Gojong of Korea in 1887. Pai-Chai University was formally established in 1895, initially offering programs in English literature, Korean literature, and theology, with subsequent expansion into various other disciplines. Pai-Chai School played a pivotal role in modernizing education in Korea by introducing Western educational systems and emphasizing democratic principles and civic education, instilling a sense of social responsibility and public consciousness in its students. Continuous innovation and improvement of educational methods and processes ensured that students were prepared to adapt to a changing world. Pai-Chai School's educational direction played a significant role in the academic and educational development of modern Korean universities

Significant Historical Events and Transformations

Throughout its history, Pai-Chai School endured numerous challenges, standing steadfast through turbulent times. Particularly during the Japanese colonial period, the school faced adversity due to its adherence to the Christian faith and endured hardships such as temporary closures during the Korean War. Despite these trials, Pai-Chai School remained resilient, contributing to various aspects of Korean society, including humanitarian efforts and religious activities, and actively participating in overcoming the nation's tragic events. One of the reasons for this unwav- ering hope was the leadership of Reverend William B. Scranton, who served as the principal of Pai-Chai School during the Japanese colonial period. Having witnessed the March 1st Movement in Korea, he recognized the resilience and potential of the Korean people, firmly believing that freedom would eventually come to the Korean Peninsula. This belief kept hope alive during challenging times, and even during the Korean War, he emphasized the role of educational institutions in supporting students' education and societal contributions. These values continue to be reflected in the history and educational philosophy of Pai-Chai University

Educational Approach and Academic Fields

Pai-Chai School introduced Western educational systems and pedagogical methods, integrating a variety of academic fields such as science, mathematics, and literature into its curriculum. This marked a significant departure from the traditional Korean education system of the time. Pai-Chai School emphasized students' independent thinking and autonomy, encouraging them not just to passively absorb knowledge but to engage in critical thinking and self-directed learning. Additionally, a strong emphasis was placed on practical education, preparing students to become useful citizens in society. The institution also strengthened international exchanges and collaborations with foreign faculty members to provide students with an international perspective, contributing to the enhancement of academic diversity and global competencies. Moreover, ethical considerations influenced by Christian principles were integrated into the education, and subjects such as ethics and philosophy were taught. Finally, the institution recognized the importance of cultural diversity through internationalization efforts, enabling students to understand various cultures and perspectives and develop a global outlook, contributing to the enhancement of academic diversity and global competencies.
